William Steele Holman letter, 1861.

Holman states his opinion on the propositions by John J. Crittenden to restore the Missouri Compromise line and protect slavery in the District of Columbia by constitutional amendment. He believes passage is necessary to preserve the union. The letter was written during congressional debate and is postmarked Jan. 11, 1861.
